Insurance claims adjusters study human anatomy

Insurance claims adjusters every day must make decisions about accident and injury claims. But many haven’t studied science or human anatomy since high school or college. How accurately can you handle a whiplash claim without actually understanding what the injury does to bone and muscle? Why do injuries to cartilage seem so much more problematic than fractures of bone?

A group of claims adjusters in Rochester decided to change all that. They contacted CBET’s Dr. Douglas Merrill and asked for a refresher workshop on basic human anatomy.

The group met in CBET’s Laboratory for Anatomical Studies to examine skeletal material and a fully dissected human cadaver. Dr. Merrill showed them a human brain and spinal column, preserved organs and musculature, as he explained their functions and the impact of various injuries.

The session was a huge success. Never before, attendees said, had they understood so clearly the issues they deal with every day.

Says Dr. Merrill: “When I took them to the anatomy lab for the first time, many were clearly apprehensive. Although they deal with human anatomy and injuries on a daily basis, the closest they had ever come to seeing these structures were photographs and illustrations in books. And now, they were about to see the real thing. It was fun to watch them overcome their hesitation and really get into it. I believe they left with a new appreciation for the wonderful intricacies of the human body.”
