Renowned scientist brings 25-years of experience to CBET

Dr. P. Andrew Karam brings to CBET over a quarter century of experience that spans the breadth of radiation safety in the workplace, in the environment, and in the military, giving him unique insights and a focus on many of the practical aspects of radiation safety. His experience began with an 8-year tour of duty in the Navy's nuclear power program in which he served as a reactor prototype training plant staff instructor on an attack nuclear submarine. He worked for an environmental consulting firm where he oversaw projects that included environmental investigations for NASA and at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

Dr. Karam’s experiences also include stints as Health Physicist at The Ohio State University, where he was responsible for a complete overhaul of the university's radioactive waste and radioactive sealed source programs, and as Radiation Safety Officer at the University of Rochester where he directed the renovation of The Radiation Safety office, laboratory, and waste processing areas, re-wrote the university’s Radiation Safety Manual, and completed a comprehensive training program for the technical staff.

An internationally recognized authority, Dr. Karam served on the Health Physics Society’s Board of Directors, a National Academy of Sciences subcommittee on the effects of battlefield use of depleted uranium and on a committee for the National Council of Radiation Protection and Measurements. He works with local, state, national, and international organizations to help them prepare for the possibility of a terrorist attack – these include New York City, the city of Rochester, the State of New York, the Panama Canal Authority, and the Canadian Army. He provides consulting services to the International Atomic Energy Agency on matters pertaining to radioactive materials security and national radiation safety regulation programs, and he is a frequent member of IAEA site teams investigating nuclear programs around the world.

Dr. Karam’s extensive national and international experiences help to inform his teaching; because of them, he has a tremendous variety of case studies and personal experiences he can draw from, giving real-world examples to back up the academic content of his courses.  More important, however, is his genuine love of teaching – his enthusiasm for his profession, his science, and his teaching combine to make him a popular and highly-rated professor; while his lively and innovative teaching style make his classes both informative and enjoyable.
